What You'll Experience
8 Days Essential Morocco Tour Itinerary
Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Telouet Kasbah → Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah → Ouarzazate
Your 8-day Morocco desert tour commences with an early pick-up from your Marrakech accommodation or the airport. We begin our scenic drive through the fascinating High Atlas Mountains, crossing the spectacular Tizi-N-Tichka pass (2260m). We'll make stops for you to capture panoramic views of the breathtaking landscapes.
Our route includes a visit to the historic Kasbah of Telouet. This ancient fortress tells stories of Morocco's rich history and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Next, we continue to the renowned Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage fortified village and a famed backdrop for numerous Hollywood movies (Gladiator, Alexander, The Mummy) and TV series like Game of Thrones. After exploring this iconic ksar, we proceed to Ouarzazate, often called "The Gate of the Desert."
Dinner and an overnight stay in a comfortable hotel in Ouarzazate.
Ouarzazate → Skoura Palm Groves & Amridil Kasbah → Roses Valley → Dades Valley
After breakfast, we explore the city of Ouarzazate. Our first stop is the Atlas Film Studios, where many famous movies were filmed. We also visit the impressive Taourirt Kasbah, a fortified mud castle and one of Morocco's most ancient and spectacular Ksars.
We then drive east to visit the beautiful Amridil Kasbah, picturesquely situated amidst the palm groves of Skoura. Our journey continues to Kalaa M'gouna, famous for the Roses Valley. An annual Rose Festival is held here in May, showcasing local rose products from perfumes and rose water to oils and cosmetics.
Finally, we drive to the Dades Valley via Boumalne Dades, making inevitable stops at the "monkey fingers" rock formation and a viewpoint atop a mountain overlooking the Dades Valley. Dinner and overnight in a hotel in Boumalne Dades.
Boumalne Dades → Todra Gorges → Erfoud → Merzouga Sahara → Overnight in Luxury Desert Camp
Following breakfast, we journey to the Todra Gorges. The Todra River has carved a grand canyon through the mountains, creating high, red cliff-sided walls → a truly spectacular sight. Feel free to wander through the gorges and appreciate the raw beauty of the landscape.
We then drive through the palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad, with time for lunch (at your leisure) en route.
In the afternoon, we arrive at the Merzouga Sahara Desert. Here, you will switch to camels for an unforgettable trek across the sandy desert. A stop will be made atop a high dune for you to enjoy the magical desert sunset. Continue to your luxury desert camp, where you can enjoy traditional Berber drums music while dancing around a campfire under a vast, open sky filled with stars. Dinner and overnight stay in the camp.
Explore Merzouga Region: Nomads, Khamlia Music, Merzouga Lake, Erg Chebbi & Palm Grove
Waking up early to witness the beautiful Sahara sunrise from the middle of the desert is an absolute must-do. After free time for breakfast, you will return by camel (or 4x4) to Merzouga village, where your driver awaits.
We dedicate today, part of your Morocco desert tour, to exploring the fascinating Merzouga region. This area boasts many incredible sites, from vast sand dunes and wild lakes to ancient mines, fossil areas, and fabulous oases → ideal for various outdoor activities.
Our exploration begins with an off-road drive to visit an ancient eyeliner mine. We then pay a visit to a nomad family in their traditional, handmade woven tent, learning about their way of life while sharing a Berber tea. Our next stop is Khamlia village, where you will enjoy authentic Gnaoua music and dance performances by inhabitants originating from sub-Saharan countries like Mali, Sudan, and Niger.
After free time for lunch in a local restaurant, we take a relaxing stroll through a palm tree grove. Later, we drive a few kilometers to see the wild lake of Merzouga, also known as the flamingos' lake (seasonal). Dinner and overnight stay in a hotel in Merzouga.
Merzouga Dunes → Rissani Market → Erfoud Fossils → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Cedar Forest → Ifrane → Fes
After breakfast, we leave the desert to visit Rissani town, the ancient capital of Tafilalet. Rissani remains a major trading center in the region, with a large, lively souk (market) particularly animated on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. After a stroll in the Rissani souk, we continue to Erfoud, where we visit one of the workshops renowned for its fossilized marble.
Our journey then takes us along the scenic Ziz River, stopping for a panoramic view of the expansive Ziz Valley. Enjoy free time for lunch in Midelt. We then continue to the Cedar Forest, home to Barbary macaques; feel free to observe and feed them while wandering in the forest.
Afterwards, we visit Ifrane, famous for its cool temperatures, occasional snow, and alpine-style houses, earning it the nickname "Switzerland of Morocco." Finally, we drop you off at your accommodation in Fes.
Guided Sightseeing Tour of Fes Medina
After breakfast at your Fes accommodation, we pick you up to explore the captivating city of Fes. Considered one of Morocco's imperial cities, Fes is also the country's undisputed cultural and religious center.
We begin our day by visiting the impressive Royal Palace gate. Then, we explore the well-preserved medieval Medina (Fes el-Bali), a UNESCO World Heritage site. The iconic Blue Gate (Bab Boujloud) serves as the main entrance to the old Medina.
You will enter the Medina with an official local guide to visit key landmarks such as The Medrasa Bouanania, the Najjarine fountain, the famous Tanneries, and finally, the Quaraouin Mosque and University → recognized as the oldest existing, continually operating university in the world.
After our Medina exploration, we leave to visit the Jewish quarter, "the Mellah." We then drive to an ancient fortress for panoramic views of the Medina and the entire city of Fes. Afterwards, you will be returned to your riad.
Fes → Meknes → Volubilis Roman Ruins → Chefchaouen (The Blue City)
Following breakfast, we depart to visit Meknes, the Ismaili capital and another of Morocco's imperial cities. In Meknes, we will visit historical sites such as Bab Al-Mansour, the Sahrij Souani basin, the Royal stables, the granary, and the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum. Enjoy free time for lunch.
Next, we drive approximately 30 km from Meknes to visit the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis. This remarkably well-preserved archaeological site is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site and features many beautiful mosaics scattered throughout, along with ancient pillars and archways.
After strolling through the impressive ruins of Volubilis, we head north via Ouazzane to reach Chefchaouen, nestled in the Rif Mountains. Chefchaouen is famously known as the "Blue City" or "Blue Pearl" due to its distinctive buildings and alleyways, all painted in various shades of blue. Overnight stay in a hotel in Chefchaouen.
Chefchaouen → Transfer to Tangier Airport
After breakfast, and depending on your flight schedule, you may have some free time to take a final stroll through the beautiful blue alleyways of Chefchaouen. Afterwards, we will drive through the scenic Rif Mountains to reach Tangier.
Upon arrival in Tangier, we will transfer you to the airport for your departure.
